Baby Bolin was really really lonely because Mako was working all the time. He saw Pabu in an illegal pet vendor's street shop and fell in love. It took him weeks to save up the money -- by keeping the change when Mako sent him out to get groceries and by running errands for gang members behind Mako's back.
✖ Pabu doesn't particularly like being petted
✖ Literacy
Bolin can write his name and read some, but for the most part he's illiterate. He grew up on the streets; learning how to read and write was not a high priority. In Exsilium, it's worse because he's never seen English characters before. He'd be more familiar with Chinese characters.
